If you are buying new, shop R129 / i-Size and stay rear-facing until over 15 months — longer if the seat allows. Forward-facing is legal later, not better. Children need a seat until 12 or 135 cm. Skip turning early because the baby is bored. GOV.UK is the law. We name the category, not a brand winner.
    
## When must an i-Size seat stay rear-facing?
 

Until the child is over 15 months on a height-based R129 / i-Size seat. That is GOV.UK, checked 13 August 2026.
      Many seats allow rear-facing far longer. Use the maker’s height range, not a birthday. The

## When is forward-facing legal?
 

When the seat’s own rules say so, and — for i-Size — after 15 months. An older R44 seat you already own can still
      be legal with the right label and fit. Buying new? Prefer R129. Never put a rear-facing seat in front of an active

## Should you turn because the baby is bored?
 

No. Rear-facing is for the head and neck, not for the view. A mirror is cheaper than an early turn. If they have
      outgrown the height range, that is a different seat, not a direction change for fun. Skip listings that sell
      forward-facing as a developmental milestone. The law is the floor; longer rear-facing is allowed.

 
## Does ISOFIX change when you can turn?
 

No. ISOFIX is a fitting method, not a higher legal class. A correctly seatbelt-fitted R129 seat is legal. Some
      ISOFIX-only infant carriers cannot belt into an aircraft seat — that is a cabin problem, not a reason to face
