Only if you will walk with the baby on you and you will learn the position. The NHS lists slings as an extra some parents include, with safety advice first. A well-fitted wrap can cover house-to-car and buses. It does not replace a rear-facing car seat. Skip a carrier you will not practise with a doll or a fitter. NHS Best Start in Life names slings and carriers as optional, then points at RoSPA and the T.I.C.K.S. rule because a small number of deaths from suffocation have been linked to slings used badly (checked 13 Aug 2026). A stretchy wrap is often the first newborn carry if you will learn the wrap. A buckle carrier with a newborn mode or insert is faster on a school run. A mei tai sits between them. Face-in, high and tight, beats a facing-out fashion pose in the first months. Match the type to how you already dress, not to Instagram. T.I.C.K.S. is the UK sling-consortium checklist: Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off the chest, Supported back. NHS and The Lullaby Trust both point at it. A branded carrier used in a slump is still a risk. If you cannot see the face by glancing down, redo the position before you walk. - Tight — fabric hugs; slack lets them slump and can restrict breathing. - In view — you see the face; cloth does not cover mouth or nose. - Close enough to kiss — high on your chest, not down on your belly. - Keep chin off the chest — a finger-width under the chin. - Supported back — tummy and chest against you in an inward carry. The NHS and The Lullaby Trust say not to feed in a sling while you move around. Take them out, feed in a safe position, then return them or put them down in a clear cot. We will not sell “hands-free feeding” as a feature. ## Can a baby carrier replace a pushchair? For short trips, often yes — if the position is right and you can still see the face. For long pavements, rain, and a weekly shop, a lie-flat pushchair still earns its keep. Do not buy a travel system before the car seat. Skip it if you will not learn the position. Skip it as a sleep space — overnight belongs in a cot. Skip facing-out until the maker and head control allow it. Skip a carrier that delays the car seat. They can be, if the baby is high, tight, face visible, chin off chest, and you stay awake and attentive. NHS and The Lullaby Trust both point at T.I.C.K.S. Premature or medically fragile babies need clinician advice first. Can I feed my baby in a sling? The NHS and The Lullaby Trust advise taking the baby out to feed, then returning them or putting them down safely. Hands-free feeding while you walk is not a feature we will recommend. Do I need a carrier and a pushchair? Not both on day one. A carrier can cover short trips if you will use it well. A lie-flat buggy matters more if you will walk for hours.
