Verdict

UK baby clothes use age bands, not a legal standard. Start with a week of 0–3 month sleepsuits before birth; add newborn size only if you know the baby is small. Size up when poppers strain or feet vanish. Skip a full wardrobe in one band. Brands disagree at the edges — the baby in front of you wins.

Not for: Skip this if you needed a medical growth chart. NHS centile charts are free and they are not a clothes size. We have not measured every high-street label.

Key takeaways
   - Age bands are a shop convention. They are not GOV.UK law and not an NHS growth chart.
- Six to eight 0–3 month sleepsuits cover a week of leaks if you can wash.
- Newborn size is a gamble as a gift. 0–3 months plus a receipt is kinder.
- Size up when the garment is tight, not when the hang-tag month arrives.
- Second-hand clothes in the next band are often the right saving.
- GOTS still only counts with a real logo. Size and fibre are different jobs.

## What size baby clothes should you buy before birth in the UK?

A week of 0–3 month sleepsuits and a few bodysuits is the default. Add newborn size only if scans or a previous baby suggest a small start. Gifts in newborn-only knits are how drawers fill with clothes that last nine days. Include a receipt. You will learn the next band faster than a chart can tell you.

UK retailers print months on the label. That is a convenience, not a statutory size like car-seat height. Brands disagree at the edges — the same as nappy weight bands. We will not invent centimetre tables we did not measure. Put six to eight cotton sleepsuits in the first wash, not a colour-coded year. See [babygrow vs sleepsuit](/guides/babygrow-vs-sleepsuit-uk) for the garment names.

## When should you size up baby clothes?

When poppers strain, feet disappear, or the neck is a fight every change. The month on the label is a hint, not a calendar invite. Some babies skip newborn entirely. Some live in 0–3 past three months. Buy a small pack of the next band before the current one becomes a wrestling match.

Overnight sleepsuits that are too small are miserable at 3 a.m. Too-huge neck holes are a different problem for sleeping bags — see the TOG guide for bag fit, not this page. For everyday clothes, strain and missing feet are the tell. [Nappy size](/tools/nappy-size) is the same idea: the baby in front of you beats the bag.

## How many sleepsuits does a UK newborn need?

Six to eight in 0–3 months is enough if you can wash every other day. Add bodysuits if you layer, not a second identical stack of prints. Fold-over cuffs beat separate scratch mitts. Two-way zips or poppers to the ankle save 3 a.m. You do not need fourteen coming-home outfits.

Leaks, spit-up and a slow boiler are the real size of the drawer. A second-hand pile from a friend can replace half the new pack — [second-hand kit](/guides/second-hand-baby-kit-uk). GOTS is worth a look on high-contact pieces when the logo is real — [GOTS baby clothes](/guides/gots-baby-clothes-uk). A wardrobe in 0–3 is a gift problem, not a need.

## Is UK baby clothing size the same as US onesie size?

No. UK shops mean a footed all-in-one when they say sleepsuit or babygrow. US “onesie” often means the vest. Month bands also do not match across sites. Check whether the garment has legs and feet before you import a pack of six. If the size chart is in pounds only, convert carefully or buy UK.

This is a language page as much as a size page. Import listings also mix seasons. A US 3–6 month summer romper is not a UK winter sleepsuit. Stay on UK retailers if you want UK returns. [Organic clothes](/guides/organic-baby-clothes-guide) covers fibre, not inches.

## What size should you gift if the baby has already arrived?

Ask what they are wearing this week, then buy the next band. 3–6 months is the usual safe gift after a standard birth. Newborn size is almost always too late. A voucher or muslins beat a guess in a print they already own. Skip scratchy knits for overnight sleep.

Second babies often skip newborn clothes the first child never wore. See [second baby kit](/guides/second-baby-kit-uk). If you cannot ask, 3–6 month cotton sleepsuits and a receipt are the least wasteful guess. [Newborn gifts](/guides/best-newborn-gifts-uk) still prefers muslins and vouchers over a themed knit.

## Do you need different sizes for day clothes and night clothes?

You need a sleepsuit that fits tonight, not a separate nightwear wardrobe. A too-small all-in-one is a bad overnight. A huge neck hole on a sleeping bag is a different product. Bodysuits layer under sleepsuits in cold rooms. Do not buy two of every print in two size systems.

Nightwear flammability and GOTS are separate rules from month bands. Keep hoods and costumes out of the cot. The Lullaby Trust wants a clear sleep space — clothes that fit are part of not overheating with extra blankets. Pair this page with [sleeping bags and TOG](/guides/baby-sleeping-bags-tog-uk) if the room is the variable, not the drawer.

## Frequently asked questions
What size clothes should I buy for a UK newborn? Most people start with 0–3 months. Add newborn size only if you expect a small baby. Six to eight sleepsuits is a week of kit. When should I move from 0–3 to 3–6 months? When the garment is tight, feet have vanished, or changes are a fight — not on the baby’s three-month birthday. Are UK and US baby clothes sizes the same? No. Bands and garment names differ. Check whether the listing is a vest or a footed all-in-one before you buy.
