Verdict

A sleeping bag is a wearable blanket so you do not use a duvet. Match TOG to the room, not the season on the label, and keep the room about 16–20°C. If the chest or neck is sweaty, you overdid it. Skip nests, weighted bags, and extra blankets on top of a 2.5 TOG bag in a warm room.

Not for: Skip this if your clinician has given different overlay advice for a premature baby still under hospital guidance. Follow the unit, not a website.

Key takeaways
   - Match TOG to tonight’s room, not the season printed on the hang-tag.
- The Lullaby Trust wants a comfortable room, try 16–20°C, and a baby who is not too hot. It does not publish a universal TOG table.
- A well-fitted bag is easier to use correctly than loose blankets. It is not a SIDS-proof device.
- Do not put a blanket over a sleeping bag. The TOG already is the blanket.
- Stop swaddling when they show signs of rolling. Arms-free is the next product, not a tighter wrap.
- Size by chest fit and the maker’s weight range. “They will grow into it” is the wrong overnight size.
- Sleep bags are for a flat sleep space. A car seat and a pram have their own harness rules.
- Start with one bag that matches the room you actually have. A 1.0 plus 2.5 pair is optional, not day-one kit.

## What TOG sleeping bag does a baby need?

The one that matches tonight’s room temperature, not a “winter bag” you leave on in a heated flat. As a starting map: around 16–20°C is the Lullaby Trust room range; lighter TOG as the room warms. Always check the maker’s own chart. If you cannot measure the room, buy a cheap thermometer before you buy a second bag.

The Lullaby Trust asks you to keep the room comfortable, try 16–20°C, and avoid the baby getting too hot (page last reviewed 1 February 2025; checked 13 August 2026). It does not publish a universal TOG table. Brand charts (Grobag and others) do. We use those charts as a starting point in the [TOG calculator](/tools/tog-calculator), labelled as manufacturer-style guidance, not as a Lullaby Trust table. If a brand’s chart and a sweaty neck disagree, trust the baby.

## Is a baby sleeping bag safer than blankets?

A well-fitted bag is easier to use correctly than loose blankets, which is why many UK parents prefer one. It is not a SIDS-proof device. The bag must fit so the baby cannot wriggle inside it, with the chest fastening, and must not be used with a duvet. A swaddle is different — when they roll, stop.

The Lullaby Trust’s sleep space still wants a clear cot: firm flat waterproof mattress, lightweight bedding, no pillows or duvets. A sleeping bag can be that lightweight bedding. A quilt cannot. If the bag is huge in the neck, it is the wrong size — not a “they will grow into it” gift.

## Can you put a blanket over a sleeping bag?

Usually you should not. The TOG already is the blanket. Adding a cellular blanket on top of a 2.5 TOG bag in a 19°C room is how babies overheat. If the room is genuinely cold and the chest feels cool, fix the room or step up TOG — do not stack. Never use a weighted blanket on a baby.

Check the chest or back of the neck, not the hands. Hands feel cold. Sweat or a hot chest is the stop sign. That check is in every decent UK safer-sleep leaflet; we are not inventing a diagnostic.

## When is a sleeping bag the wrong product?

When it does not fit, when you were about to add a duvet, when it is weighted, or when you use it in a car seat or pram against the maker’s instructions. Bags are for sleep in a flat space, not a travel system. A sling is a different product with a different airway check.

## When should you stop swaddling and start a sleeping bag?

Stop swaddling when they show signs of rolling, and move to a fitted bag if you use one. A wrap that pins the arms is not a bag. The Lullaby Trust is clear that babies who can roll should not be swaddled. Arms-free is the next product, not a tighter wrap. Check the maker’s start weight too.

A swaddle used overnight in a cot is still bedding. If you cannot keep it from coming loose, stop. A bag with a chest zip is easier to use correctly than a sheet that becomes a duvet. Pair with the [TOG calculator](/tools/tog-calculator) once the room is measured. [Swaddle vs sleeping bag](/compare/swaddle-vs-sleeping-bag) is the stop-date page.

## How do you size a baby sleeping bag?

Size by the maker’s weight or length range and a snug chest, not they will grow into it. A bag they can wriggle down inside is the wrong size. The neck hole should not pass the baby’s whole head easily once fastened. If you are between sizes, the smaller safe fit wins overnight.

Gift bags in 0–3 months often miss. A voucher or a 0–6 month bag with a known chest measurement is kinder. Never add a blanket on top to “make a big bag work”. Heat is the risk. See [babygrow vs sleepsuit](/guides/babygrow-vs-sleepsuit-uk) for what goes underneath.

## Can you reuse a second-hand baby sleeping bag?

A known-history bag that still fits and has a working zip can be reused. Skip stained unknown marketplace bags and anything weighted. TOG still has to match tonight’s room. Wash on the maker’s cycle before first use. A bag is not a mattress: reuse is easier here than on foam you cannot inspect.

The Lullaby Trust’s product advice is stricter on mattresses than on wearable bedding (checked 13 Aug 2026). That does not make a mystery bag a bargain. If the chest fastening is shot, skip it.

## Which baby sleeping bags are worth comparing in the UK?

Compare TOG, fit around the chest, and the maker’s own chart — not a ranked brand winner. Grobag-style 1.0 and 2.5 TOG bags are the usual Amazon UK starting pair. We have not tested them. Skip weighted bags and anything used as a duvet. Match tonight’s room, then check the baby’s chest.

### 1.0 TOG baby sleeping bag

Why compare it: The usual starting bag for a typical UK bedroom in the Lullaby Trust 16–20°C band, with a vest and sleepsuit underneath. Always use the maker’s chart.

Skip if: You cannot measure the room, or the bag is weighted, or it does not fit the chest.

### 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag

Why compare it: A cooler-room bag. Wrong in a heated flat with extra blankets on top. Compare fit and TOG label, not the season printed on the hang-tag.

Skip if: The room sits at 20°C or above, or you were about to add a duvet.

[ Compare 2.5 TOG sleeping bags on Amazon UK* ](https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=baby+sleeping+bag+2.5+TOG&tag=clevermum0c-21)

## What should you do in a heated UK flat in winter?

Match TOG to the room you measured, not the month. A January bedroom at 19°C still wants a lighter bag than a 14°C spare room. Heating overnight is common in UK flats. A 2.5 TOG bag plus a blanket in that room is how babies overheat. Check the chest. If you cannot measure, buy a thermometer before a second bag.

Worked example: radiator on, room 19°C, baby in a vest and sleepsuit. Start with 1.0 TOG. If the neck is sweaty, drop a layer or drop TOG. The Lullaby Trust’s 16–20°C range is the room target (last reviewed 1 February 2025; checked 13 Aug 2026). It is not a licence to run 2.5 TOG because the pack said winter. Use the [TOG calculator](/tools/tog-calculator) as a starting map, then the baby.

## What should you do in a genuinely cold spare room?

Fix the room if you can: close the window, add heating, move the cot off a cold wall. Then step up TOG rather than stacking blankets on a bag. A 2.5 TOG bag with a sleepsuit is a starting point under 16°C on brand charts. Hands are a poor guide. Check the chest.

Worked example: unused box room, 14°C at 2 a.m., no radiator. Do not add a duvet. Warm the room or use the higher TOG the maker’s chart allows, and keep the cot clear. A quilt “just this once” is still a quilt. See [cot mattresses](/guides/cot-mattress-safer-sleep-uk) for the sleep surface that still has to be firm and flat.

## What clothes should go under a sleeping bag?

Whatever the maker’s chart says for that TOG and room, usually a vest, a sleepsuit, or both. The bag is the blanket. A second jumper under a 2.5 TOG bag in a 19°C room is stacking. Fold-over cuffs beat scratch mitts. If you guessed, measure the room and look at the chart — not a season hang-tag.
Clothes under the bag — starting map, not a clinical protocol (same bands as the TOG tool) Room Bag Underneath 16–20°C 1.0 TOG Vest and/or sleepsuit 16–20°C 2.5 TOG Often vest only — check the chest Over 22°C 0.5 or none Bodysuit or nappy
Babygrow and sleepsuit are the same UK garment. See [babygrow vs sleepsuit](/guides/babygrow-vs-sleepsuit-uk). Do not buy a second wardrobe to “make TOG work”.

## Can a baby sleep in a bag in a pram or car seat?

Only if the bag maker explicitly allows that product in that device. Many do not. A car seat and a pram have their own harness rules. A bag that bunches under a harness is the wrong product. Sleep bags are for a flat sleep space. Travel is the car seat or a lie-flat pram.

The Lullaby Trust treats car seats as travel, not overnight sleep (checked 13 Aug 2026). Do not leave a newborn to sleep in a carrier in the hallway because the bag looked cosy. Move them to the firm flat mattress. A sling is a different airway check — [carriers](/guides/baby-carrier-sling-uk).

## How do you check a baby is not too hot in a bag?

Feel the chest or the back of the neck, not the hands. Hands feel cold. Sweat, flushed skin, or rapid breathing is the stop sign: remove a layer now. The Lullaby Trust’s overheating advice is the free authority. A thermometer for the room helps; it does not replace that check. Do not add a blanket to “be safe”.

(checked 13 Aug 2026).

We are not a clinician. If you are worried they are unwell, use NHS 111 pages, not a TOG chart. A fever is a [thermometer](/guides/baby-thermometer-uk) and NHS thresholds, not a reason to invent a new bag.

## Do you need both 1.0 TOG and 2.5 TOG bags?

Not on day one. Start with the bag that matches the room you actually have. A typical UK bedroom in the 16–20°C band often starts at 1.0 TOG. Add 2.5 TOG if you have a cold room you cannot warm, not because a listicle sold a pair. Skip 0.5 TOG until summer if the house sits at 18°C.

Gift-givers: one correctly sized bag beats a TOG set in newborn that they will miss. A voucher or a 0–6 month 1.0 TOG with a known chest measurement is kinder. Weighted bags stay a skip. Two bags in the wrong size are still the wrong product.

## Frequently asked questions
What TOG should a newborn sleeping bag be? Match the room. In a typical 16–20°C UK bedroom, 1.0 TOG with a vest and sleepsuit is a common starting point. Always use the maker’s chart and check the baby is not too hot. Is 2.5 TOG too warm for a baby? It can be, in a heated room. 2.5 TOG is a cooler-room bag. If the room is 20°C or above, step down. Sweat at the neck means you should remove layers now. Can babies sleep with a blanket instead of a bag? Lightweight cellular blankets, tucked, are the older method. Duvets and quilts are not. A fitted sleeping bag is often simpler. Follow Lullaby Trust clear-cot rules either way. When should I stop swaddling? When they show signs of rolling. Then use a fitted sleeping bag if you use one, with arms free. Do not tighten a wrap to delay rolling.
