UK paediatric physiotherapists and the Child Accident Prevention Trust do not recommend them: injuries are common and they do not teach walking. The Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists says health professionals do not recommend baby walkers: accidents even under supervision, and they do not teach walking. CAPT says the same. RoSPA lists walkers among products not recommended. This is a skip page, not a shopping list. That is the opposite of a “best baby walker 2026” round-up. We will not publish one. APCP says they do not teach a child to walk and may delay standing and walking. They can encourage toe-walking. Floor time — rolling, sitting, crawling — is the developmental story physiotherapists actually want. A walker that lets a baby hit stairs faster than you can react is not “practice”. We are not a physiotherapy clinic. If your child has a mobility plan from a specialist, that plan wins. A shop walker is not that plan. Do not use this page to argue with a consultant. ## What should you buy instead of a baby walker? A play mat, supervised floor time, and later a stable push-along toy once they already cruise along furniture. A bouncer is optional sit-and-soothe, still not a walker. A carrier is carrying, not walking practice. None of those replace a clear cot. Skip jumperoos sold as the same job if you wanted a walker workaround. - Do this: floor play on a [play gym or mat](/guides/play-mat-baby-gym-uk). - Optional: a [bouncer](/guides/baby-bouncer-uk) on the floor, harnessed, awake. - Later: a stable push-along when they already pull to stand — not a wheeled seat they cannot see over. - Never: a walker as a babysitter, near stairs, cookers, or patio doors. You do not have to use it. Returning it, gifting it on, or leaving it in the box is allowed. APCP’s harm-reduction notes — never unattended, never near stairs, short spells — are for people who will use one anyway. They are not a shopping recommendation. A thank-you and a redirected gift list is kinder than a crash. We will not add Amazon walker hops on this page. That is the editorial line. If you want to spend affiliate-shaped money, spend it on a mat or on sleep kit that actually matters. APCP notes that if you do use a walker, only buy one that meets the current British Standard and do not buy second-hand. That is harm reduction, not a BabyNido pick. A push-along trolley that a standing, cruising toddler walks behind is a different product from a seat with wheels around a baby who cannot sit out of it. Age, standing, and whether they can see where they are going are the tests. If it is a circular frame they sit in, it is a walker. Skip that shape. High chairs and carriers are also not walkers. Keep the categories honest so a gift list cannot hide a walker as “activity centre”. ## Frequently asked questions Are baby walkers illegal in the UK? No. They are still sold.
