Verdict

If you breastfeed, pads and a simple lanolin are the usual kit; a pump is only if you will express. Lansinoh listings dominate Amazon maternity sales. Pain that needs more than cream needs a feeding supporter, not a second gadget. Skip this if you need clinical latch advice.

Not for: Skip this if you need breastfeeding support, tongue-tie assessment, or formula amounts. We compare accessories. We are not a lactation consultant.

## What breastfeeding products do you actually need?

NHS feeding support first. Kit second: absorbent pads if you leak, a nipple cream a midwife is happy with, and muslins. A pump is a decision to express, not a default. Nursing bras are clothing, not gadgets. Skip a feeding pillow sold as a medical device. Skip packing a pump “just in case” unless you already express.

Amazon UK Baby bestsellers include Lansinoh pads and HPA lanolin near the top (checked 13 Aug 2026). Pump buyer’s guides exist because parents search them. We cover both as optional kit. Official feeding pages stay free: NHS breastfeeding, and your midwife.

## Breast pads, lanolin or a pump — which first?

Pads if you leak. Lanolin if nipples are sore and a supporter has not named something else. A pump if you will be apart from the baby or you have been advised to express. Do not buy all three as a “breastfeeding starter” before birth unless you know you will use them.
Kit Choose if Skip if Disposable or washable pads You leak between feeds You are not lactating Simple lanolin Soreness and your unit is happy with it Pain is the main story — get support Single-user electric pump You will express regularly You hoped a machine would fix latch Hospital-grade hire pump Advised, or a short intense expressing period A casual “just in case” buy
## Which breastfeeding accessories are worth comparing?

Compare Lansinoh-style pads, HPA lanolin, and a pump only if you will express — not a ranked “best pump 2026”. We have not measured output. Skip this whole compare if you wanted a feeding clinic. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when live.

### Lansinoh disposable breast pads

A top Amazon UK maternity listing. Leak protection for the parent, not a baby product. Compare absorbency and whether you prefer washable pads.

Skip if: You are not lactating, or washable pads already work.

### Lansinoh HPA lanolin

Hospital-bag staple on Amazon UK. For sore nipples — follow NHS breastfeeding support if feeding hurts beyond a simple cream. We are not a lactation clinic.

Skip if: Pain is the main story: get a feeding supporter, not a second tube first.

### Electric breast pump

Pump guides exist because parents search them. Compare only if you will express. Hospital-grade hire vs a single-user pump are different jobs.

Skip if: You have not decided to express, or you needed latch support rather than a machine.

## Should a pump go in the hospital bag?

Usually no. Units have feeding supporters and, if needed, equipment. Pack pads and your own cream if you already use it. A pump at 36 weeks is how hallways fill. See [hospital bag](/guides/hospital-bag-uk). Bottles only if you already plan to use them — [bottles](/guides/baby-bottles-steriliser-uk).

A dummy too early can mask feeding cues — [dummies](/guides/dummy-soother-uk).

## When should you skip breastfeeding gadgets?

Skip nipple shields, extra pillows and “booster” drinks sold as medical. Skip a second pump because the first felt weak before you had a supporter watch a feed. Skip Amazon kits that mix bottles, dummies and pumps as if they were one plan.

If feeding hurts or intake worries you, a midwife, health visitor or feeding supporter beats this page. We will not compete with them.

## Is a breast pump a good baby-shower gift?

Only if they asked. It is a personal, medical-adjacent machine, not a cute shower object. Pads or a voucher are safer surprises. A pump nobody wanted is how unused kit sits in a box. Include a receipt if you buy one anyway.

Muslins still win as a default gift. Consumable pads are easier to get right than a motor.

## Frequently asked questions
What do I need to breastfeed? Support and the baby, not a catalogue. Pads if you leak. Cream if advised. A pump only if you will express. NHS breastfeeding pages and your midwife are the authority. When should I buy a breast pump? When you know you will express, or you have been advised to. Not as a default hospital-bag item. Compare hire vs a single-user pump for the job you actually have. Is Lansinoh lanolin necessary? It is a common UK listing, not a requirement. If nipples are sore, get feeding support as well as cream. We have not clinically tested brands.
