Verdict

You need one flat separate sleep space in your room for at least six months — not two lots of furniture. A Moses basket is portable and outgrown fast. A next-to-me crib helps night feeds if it stays a separate surface. A cot in your room does the whole job. Buy one; skip the nest.

Not for: Skip this if you already own a safe cot in the bedroom and are only shopping for extra baskets. You do not need this purchase.

## Is a Moses basket worth buying?

Only as your first sleep space if you want something small and accept it will last weeks to a few months. It is not safer than a cot. It still needs a firm flat waterproof mattress and a clear interior. If you already have a cot that fits in the bedroom, the basket is convenience, not a safety upgrade.

Stands must be stable. Never put a basket on a sofa or an unguarded height. The baby outgrows the basket when they start rolling or pushing up — follow the maker’s weight and development limits, not a round number from a listicle.

## Is a next-to-me crib safer than a Moses basket?

It is a different shape, not a higher safety class. A bedside crib can make night feeds easier while keeping a separate surface if the side drops as designed. It is not a licence to sleep on a pillow together. If you would use it as a shared bed, skip it and read the Lullaby Trust on co-sleeping.

We are not going to launder co-sleeping into a furniture SKU. The Lullaby Trust’s headline remains a separate clear space in your room. A next-to-me crib that is used that way can fit. A “sidecar” used as an extension of an adult duvet does not.

## Can you skip both and use a cot from day one?

Yes, and for many homes it is the better spend. A cot with a firm mattress in the parents’ room covers the six-month room-sharing window and still works after. You avoid a basket you must store or sell. If a full cot does not fit, a compact crib is the space solution, not a medical one.

Put the budget into the mattress and a room thermometer before a second piece of sleep furniture. See [cot mattresses](/guides/cot-mattress-safer-sleep-uk).

## Where should the sleep space sit in the room?

In the same room as you, away from radiators, windows that blast sun, and trailing cords. A basket on a stand must be stable. Never park a Moses basket on a sofa or an unguarded bed. The Lullaby Trust’s room-sharing window is at least six months — moving the cot to a nursery early is the wrong comfort.

Cords from blinds are a separate UK safety story: keep them out of reach. We will not turn this into a window-furnishing catalogue. If the only place a cot fits is in another room, change the furniture plan before you change the safer-sleep plan. A compact crib that stays in your room beats a beautiful cot down the hall.

Next-to-me cribs still need a firm flat mattress and a clear interior. The dropped side is for a separate surface used as designed, not for sharing a duvet. If the sales pitch is “like sleeping together, but safer”, read The Lullaby Trust on co-sleeping instead of the product page (checked 13 Aug 2026). A cot in the same room remains the boring, complete answer for most UK bedrooms.

## Which Moses baskets and next-to-me cribs are worth comparing?

Compare a firm mattress and a clear interior, not the knit colour. Clair de Lune and Little Green Sheep baskets, and SnuzPod-style cribs, are common UK listings. We have not overnight-tested them. Skip quilts in the bundle. A cot in your room still wins if it fits.

### Clair de Lune Moses basket

A common UK palm-basket listing. It still needs a firm flat mattress and a clear interior. Outgrown when they roll or hit the maker’s limit.

Skip if: You already have a cot that fits in the bedroom, or the listing includes a quilt.

### The Little Green Sheep Moses basket

Often sold with a natural mattress. Replace or check that mattress against firm/flat/snug. A stand must be stable — never a sofa.

Skip if: You wanted a bedside crib with a drop side, or you will park it in another room.

### SnuzPod-style next-to-me crib

A bedside crib can make night feeds easier while keeping a separate surface if used as designed. It is not a shared duvet.

Skip if: You would use it as an extension of the adult bed, or a cot already fits in your room.

## Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Moses basket and a next-to-me crib? No. Pick one separate flat sleep space for your room. A cot can be that space from birth if it fits. Extra baskets are convenience, not a requirement. When do babies outgrow a Moses basket? When they reach the maker’s limit, or when they can roll or push up, often around three to four months — it varies. Move to a cot rather than adding bumpers.
