Verdict

Start with one disposable brand in newborn size and have a 3–6 kg pack ready — many babies skip tiny sizes. Unscented wipes or cotton wool beat character packs. Cloth is a laundry system, not a surprise gift. Skip scented bins and wipe warmers. Skip this if you already opened a brand that works.

Not for: Skip this if you need a clinician for a nappy-rash treatment plan. We compare first packs, not prescriptions.

## How many nappies does a UK newborn actually need?

A first pack in newborn size plus a pack in the next size up is enough to start. Newborns can use many nappies a day; we will not freeze a fake average count. Many babies skip the tiniest size. Do not gift a jumbo mixed box as the only present. Buy more of the size that actually fits.

NHS Best Start in Life lists nappies and cotton wool or unscented wipes on the newborn kit (checked 13 Aug 2026). It does not name a brand. Retailer baby events do. Our job is first-pack logic and a skip-list: scented bins, wipe warmers, and a cloth system sprung on new parents. See [newborn essentials](/guides/newborn-essentials-uk) for spend order.

## Disposable or cloth nappies on day one?

Disposable is the lower-friction start for most UK homes. Cloth is a wash, dry and fit system — worth it if you want that work, not as a surprise. Hybrid is still a system. Do not fight an ideology in the first fortnight. If you choose cloth later, keep a disposable pack for nights out and grandparents.
Route Choose if Skip if Disposable, one brand You want a simple start and easy grandparents You already know you will run cloth and have drying space Cloth starter kit You asked for it and have laundry capacity It is a surprise gift Mix from day one You have a plan for both You hoped mixing would avoid buying either properly
## Wipes or cotton wool — what should you start with?

Cotton wool and cooled boiled water is still what some units suggest for the first weeks. Unscented, alcohol-free wipes are the usual home start. Skip fragrance, lotion-in-the-wipe, and character packs that cost extra for a print. A changing bag needs a pack you will actually finish — see [changing bags](/guides/changing-bags-uk).

Barrier cream is a separate decision: use what already works or what your unit named. We will not invent a “best nappy cream 2026”. If the skin is a clinical problem, stop reading listicles and use a pharmacist or GP.

## Which nappies and wipes are worth comparing in the UK?

Compare a newborn disposable pack, fragrance-free wipes, and a cloth starter only if you want cloth — not a ranked best-of. Pampers-style and supermarket own-brand listings are the usual set. We have not leak-tested them. Skip mixed jumbo gifts. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when live.

### Newborn disposable nappies

Start with one brand in newborn and have a 3–6 kg pack ready — many babies skip tiny sizes. Do not gift a jumbo mixed box as the only present.

Skip if: You already opened a brand they hate, or you are gifting without a receipt.

### WaterWipes / fragrance-free wipes

Unscented, alcohol-free wipes or cotton wool are the NHS-style starting point. Compare ingredients, not character packs.

Skip if: You prefer cotton wool and boiled water as your unit advised.

### Reusable cloth nappy starter

Cloth is a system, not a one-pack decision. Compare a starter kit only if you want the laundry. Not a newborn gift unless they asked.

Skip if: You are gifting it as a surprise, or you have no drying space.

## What nappy extras should you skip?

Skip wipe warmers, scented nappy bins, and a “disposal system” with branded refills. Skip a changing table if a mat on a chest works. Skip newborn-only bulk if you do not know the weight. A hospital bag needs a small pack, not a warehouse — [hospital bag UK](/guides/hospital-bag-uk).
   - Skip: wipe warmers, scented bins, themed wipe packets as the only wipes.
- Skip: cloth as a surprise, and “biodegradable” claims we cannot source to a named standard here.
- Keep: one brand, next size up, unscented wipes or cotton wool, a waterproof mat.

## Are nappies a good newborn gift?

A named brand and size with a receipt can be kind. A mixed jumbo box without a receipt is how cupboards fill with the wrong waistband. Muslins and a 0–3 month sleepsuit are lower-regret defaults — [newborn gifts](/guides/best-newborn-gifts-uk). Offer to buy a second pack of whatever they open first.

If you are packing the ward bag, three sleepsuits plus a small nappy pack beats a toiletry tower. Bath kit still waits: [baby baths](/guides/baby-bath-uk).

## Frequently asked questions
What size nappies should I buy for a newborn? A newborn pack plus the next size (often 3–6 kg) is the usual start. Many babies skip the tiniest size. Keep a receipt if you can. Fit matters more than the print on the packet. Are cloth nappies cheaper? They can be over years if you will wash and dry them. They are not cheaper if they sit in a cupboard. Do not gift cloth as a surprise. We will not invent a payback figure we have not sourced. What wipes should I use on a newborn? Unscented, alcohol-free wipes or cotton wool as your unit advised. Skip fragrance. If skin is a medical issue, ask a clinician — this page is a first-pack guide.
