Verdict

White noise is optional. It is not a safer-sleep device and it does not replace a clear cot in your room. Buy the mattress and, if you drive, the car seat first. A phone speaker is enough to test the idea. Skip a machine sold as SIDS-proof. The Lullaby Trust still wins on sleep.

Not for: Skip this if you wanted a ranking of branded machines, a decibel league, or a medical sleep-training protocol. We have not lab-tested speakers.

Key takeaways
   - White noise is a comfort tool some families like. It is not a medical device.
- Room-share and a clear cot still come first. A speaker does not replace that.
- Test with a phone before you buy a machine. Many families stop there.
- Keep it out of the cot and low enough to talk over. We will not invent a decibel table.
- Skip anything whose pitch is fear or a star rating as a safety proof.
- Spend on a mattress and a seat first. This is optional kit.

## Is white noise a safer-sleep product?

No. Safer sleep is a firm flat mattress, a clear cot, on the back, in your room for at least six months. A speaker does not change that. If a listing claims to prevent SIDS, that is a skip, not a feature. The Lullaby Trust is free. Buy a mattress before a machine.

Monitors have the same lie: extra information is not a safer-sleep device. White noise is one step further from the cot rules. See [cot mattress](/guides/cot-mattress-safer-sleep-uk) and [monitors](/guides/baby-monitors-uk). If the room is too hot, fix TOG — [sleeping bags](/guides/baby-sleeping-bags-tog-uk) — not a louder hiss.

## Should you buy a machine before you test a phone?

No. Play a simple loop from a phone across the room for a few nights. If nobody sleeps better, you have saved the money. If it helps, then compare a dedicated unit that you can run without unlocking a handset at 3 a.m. Skip a subscription app as the product.

A machine is convenience: one button, no notifications. It is not a better medical outcome. Plug-in units belong on a dresser, not in the sleep space. Battery travel versions are optional if you already know the sound helps. See [how much a baby costs](/guides/how-much-does-a-baby-cost-uk) before you add another row to the trolley.

## How loud should white noise be?

Low enough that an adult can talk over it, and not in the cot. We will not invent a decibel league we did not measure. If you have to raise your voice, it is too loud. Place it across the room. Skip listings that brag about maximum volume as a feature for newborns.

Hearing is not a category we will fake-test. If a clinician has given different advice for a particular baby, follow the clinician. For everyone else: quieter, further away, optional. A fan in the house is sometimes the whole product, and it is already paid for.

## Can it replace room-sharing or a clear cot?

No. Room-share at least six months. Keep the cot clear. A hiss in another room is not a reason to move them down the hall early. A camera plus white noise plus a nest is three products fighting the same official page. Skip the nest. Keep the cot boring.

The [nursery checklist](/guides/nursery-checklist-uk) is the skip-first version of the room. Paint can wait. A speaker can wait. The mattress cannot. If grandparents buy a machine anyway, say thank you and still follow The Lullaby Trust.

## When is a dedicated machine worth comparing?

When a phone test already helped, you want one button at 3 a.m., and the seat and mattress are bought. Compare a simple plug-in you can place across the room. Skip toys that light up the cot and anything sold as medical. Official sleep advice stays free. Hops below are labelled.

## Frequently asked questions
Do I need a white noise machine for a newborn? No. It is optional. Test a phone first. Buy a mattress and a car seat if you drive before a speaker. Can white noise prevent SIDS? No. Nothing you buy in that aisle replaces a clear cot, back sleeping and room-sharing. Treat SIDS claims as a skip. Where should I put a white noise machine? Across the room, not in the cot. Keep it low enough to talk over. We will not invent a measured decibel table.
