Planning bands, not a mystery shop. We do not invent an “average UK newborn cost”. Check live prices. Read
[how much a baby costs](/guides/how-much-does-a-baby-cost-uk) and
[what to skip](/guides/newborn-essentials-uk) before you fill a trolley. For a household overlay,
[Money Guide’s baby budget calculator](https://moneyguide.org.uk/tools/baby-budget-calculator/)
is a sister site from the same company — not GOV.UK, not financial advice.

Verdict

Put money in the car seat and the sleep space before clothes, bags and décor. The numbers here are planning bands so you can see order of spend — not prices we recorded in a shop this week. Skip the planner if you already own the safety items and only need a gift idea.

Not for: Not a cost-of-living statistic and not advice for people without a car (drop the car-seat line).

## In what order should the money go?

Safety-standard items first: car seat if you drive, then a firm flat sleep space in your room, then consumables
and a small clothing set. Monitors and décor last. The table is a sequence, not a shopping list you must complete.
Skip any row you already own.
