How much does a baby cost in the UK?

There is no honest national average. It depends what you already own, whether you drive, and whether you pay for childcare. Put money in a legal car seat and a firm sleep space first. Use planning bands, then live prices. Childcare dwarfs kit if you pay for it.

Should UK baby names live on the NHS?

No. Names are a shortlist, not a clinical protocol. ONS publishes England and Wales rankings. BabyNido hosts meanings, filters and kit hops. Use NHS pages for symptoms, scans and feeding problems.

When can a baby sit forward-facing in a UK car seat?

On a height-based R129 / i-Size seat, not until they are over 15 months. Longer rear-facing is allowed if the seat still fits. Boredom is not a reason to turn. GOV.UK is the law.

Is a pram the same as a pushchair?

Not usually. Pram often means lie-flat from birth. Pushchair or buggy is the sit-up seat. Listings mix the words — check lie-flat, not the title. A travel system is optional if you drive.

When should you stop swaddling?

Do I need a white noise machine?

No. It is optional comfort, not a safer-sleep device. Test a phone speaker first. Buy a mattress and a car seat if you drive before a machine.

How quickly must you register a UK birth?

GOV.UK usually says 42 days in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 21 days in Scotland. Confirm on the official page. Shortlist the name here, then claim Child Benefit on GOV.UK.

Do I need a double pushchair for a second baby?

Only if you will push both on the same pavements most days. A board, a sling or the car covers many UK weeks. Measure the door. Fit car seats first.

Can I change my child’s name after I register the birth?

Yes, with extra paperwork. Everyone with parental responsibility must agree, or you need a court order. A deed poll does not rewrite the birth certificate. GOV.UK owns the law.

Do I need a will when I have a baby?

If you do not already have one that names a guardian for this child, yes. GOV.UK says a will should set out who looks after children under 18. An unsigned PDF is not a will.

Should I still claim Child Benefit if I earn too much?

Often yes. Registering can protect National Insurance credits even if you opt out of payments. GOV.UK owns the rate. High-income clawback is HMRC. We will not reprint a weekly figure.

Do I need life insurance when I have a baby?
