How many baby muslin cloths does a newborn need?

Six to ten plain cotton muslins is enough for a week of leaks and laundry. One is a gesture; a pack is a tool. Keep a couple in the changing bag, a couple on the sofa, the rest in the wash. Do not pre-buy twenty character squares. You will use the plain ones and gift the rest.

The NHS newborn list does not prescribe a muslin count; it does list muslin squares for burping on the feeding side of Best Start in Life (checked 13 Aug 2026). Treat them as consumable textiles, like sleepsuits. A newborn baby gift set that is only muslins is still a good gift.

Are organic or GOTS muslin cloths worth it?

Worth a look if the pack sits on newborn skin all day and the GOTS logo is real. Not worth a double price on a cloth you will stain in an hour. Bamboo viscose muslins feel silky; they are not automatically organic cotton. Plain cotton with a receipt beats an uncertified “natural” listing.

Same rule as organic baby clothes: certification plus contact-time. We have not measured pesticide residues on a supermarket muslin.

Can you use a muslin as a blanket in the cot?

Not as a duvet. The Lullaby Trust wants a clear cot: firm flat mattress, no pillows, no duvets, no loose covering that can end up over the face. A muslin used as shade in your arms is fine. A muslin stuffed in as bedding is the wrong job. Use a sleeping bag or a tucked cellular blanket instead.

Swaddle muslins have an end date: when they roll, stop. A sleeping bag is the longer-term tool — baby sleeping bags and TOG.

Compare pack size, fibre, and whether the print will look dirty on day two. We have not ranked brands. Aden + Anais sets, supermarket cotton squares and GOTS packs are the usual Amazon UK comparison set. Skip a single embroidered muslin sold as a “gift set” unless you are adding it to clothes.

Should a muslin ever go in the cot as a duvet?

No. A muslin is a cloth: spit-up, shade, burp, a light layer in your arms. It is not a quilt. The Lullaby Trust wants a clear cot with lightweight bedding, not extras. A large swaddle used overnight is a different product with a rolling stop. Do not gift muslins as permission to add fabric to the sleep space.

Worked example: a twelve-pack of muslins is a good gift. Tucking three of them around a baby in the Moses basket is not. Use them in your arms and the changing bag. Keep the cot clear. See sleeping bags if you wanted wearable bedding instead.
