Babygrow vs sleepsuit: same garment?

In the UK a babygrow and a sleepsuit are the same all-in-one. How they differ from bodysuits, and what to buy first.

Is a sleepsuit the same as a babygrow?

Yes in UK shops and on UK search. Brands print “sleepsuit” on care labels; parents type “babygrow”. Both mean a footed all-in-one with poppers or a zip. US “onesie” often means the vest. If you are shopping a US site, check whether the garment has legs and feet before you buy a pack of six.

What is the difference between a sleepsuit and a bodysuit?

A bodysuit covers the torso and fastens under the nappy. A sleepsuit covers arms, legs and usually feet. On a warm night a bodysuit plus nappy may be enough; in a 16–20°C room a sleepsuit (sometimes over a bodysuit) is the default. Count TOG and room temperature before adding blankets — see the TOG calculator.

The Lullaby Trust wants babies not too hot, in a room around 16–20°C (checked 13 Aug 2026). A padded pramsuit in that room is the wrong layer. Pair this page with baby sleeping bags and TOG.

Zip or poppers — which sleepsuit is better?

Two-way zips win at 2 a.m. because you can open from the foot. Poppers are fine, slower, and cheaper to replace when the zip tape fails in the wash. Avoid zips without a fabric guard at the chin. Fold-over mitts beat a separate mitt pack. Envelope necks beat tight collars for the first weeks.

Which babygrows and sleepsuits are worth comparing?

Compare zip or popper sleepsuits in 0–3 months, envelope necks and fold-over mitts — not the print. Multipacks beat a single embroidered grow. We have not wash-tested zips. Skip newborn-only gift knits unless you know the baby is small. John Lewis and Amazon listings are starting points, not winners.

What size babygrow should you buy for a newborn?

Start with 0–3 months unless you know the baby is small. Newborn (up to about 3 kg on many UK charts) is outgrown quickly. Premature ranges exist for a reason — use them if you have a hospital weight, not as a gift default. When gifting before birth, 0–3 months plus a receipt-friendly retailer is kinder than newborn-only.

Brand charts differ. We will not publish a single centimetre table as if every UK label agreed. Check the brand’s own chart on the product page. If you are sending a gift, newborn gifts covers why 0–3 months is the safer hamper size.

How many babygrows do you need in each size?

A week of laundry, not a drawer for every print: six to eight in the size they are in now. Keep one spare 0–3 month pack unopened if they are still in newborn. Do not pre-buy 6–9 months because it was on offer. Babies grow in fits; unused organic stock is still waste if it never touches skin.

Night changes argue for two-way zips more than for a tenth print. If you only buy poppers, you will live. If you only buy tight necks, you will fight every change. Envelope necks and fold-over mitts are the details that matter. See newborn essentials for how clothes sit behind sleep and the car seat in the budget.
