How many items should be in a baby hamper?

Four to six product lines is enough. Below that it looks mean only if you chose poorly; above that you are padding. A sleepsuit, muslins, a blanket and a parent treat already looks generous. Count lines, not the free dummy that came in the wholesale tray. Empty space in a box is not a moral failure.

1. Zip sleepsuit, 0–3 months, cotton or GOTS.
2. Muslin pack — plain, not only white if they have a dog.
3. Cellular blanket or hooded towel, not a quilt.
4. Optional: hat, book, or voucher.
5. Optional keepsake: a simple rattle kept out of the sleep space, or milestone cards.

What should not go in a newborn hamper?

Nappies in a brand they may hate, bottles if you do not know the feeding plan, sleep-positioners, nests, pillows, scented candles in a box that will sit next to baby clothes, and anything with long ribbons. Also skip “newborn” size as the only clothing. Your taste in lotion is not a gift.

If you want to include a treat for the parent who gave birth, make it clearly for them — tea, a voucher for food, socks — not a pregnancy oil they did not ask for.

Should a baby hamper be gender-neutral?

Unless you know they want pink or blue, yes. Neutral cotton in oat, sage or stripe is easier to pass on and harder to get wrong. Gendered slogans on a 0–3 month chest are a lot of personality for someone who cannot sit up. If they have a theme, they will tell you.

Sage and oat were Il Nido house colours because they photograph well and wash without looking dirty on day two. That still holds. It is not a personality.

Should you include nappies, bottles or formula in a hamper?

No, unless they asked. Nappy brands are tribal. Bottle systems are a feeding-plan decision. Formula is a medical-adjacent choice you should not guess. A voucher labelled “nappies and wipes” does the job without picking a wrong SKU. Food for the parents is the exception: a meal they can eat with one hand is not a feeding-plan trespass.

If you already bought a branded nappy bundle, include a gift receipt and say so on the card so they can swap. How should you pack and label a baby hamper?

Show the sizes on the outside. Put a gift receipt in the lid. Do not bury a sleepsuit under shredded paper so they have to hunt. Avoid candles and reed diffusers in the same box as baby clothes. A shoe box with tissue is enough. If you cannot name every item without opening it, the hamper is theatre.
