Do you need a play gym for a newborn?
No. A clean floor, a towel, and your face cover the first weeks of tummy time. A gym with arches becomes useful when they start tracking and reaching. It is optional entertainment, not a developmental prescription. Skip a gym that would delay buying the mattress. Never put play arches in a sleep space.
The NHS newborn lists do not require a play gym (checked 13 Aug 2026). Activity gyms photograph well, so they pad checklists. Our rule: supervised awake time on the floor; sleep on a firm flat mattress. See newborn essentials and cot mattresses.
Play mat or gym with arches — which first?
A wipe-clean mat first if your floor is cold or rough. Arches second, when they look at hanging toys. Skip giant puzzle mats that smell of chemicals you cannot source. Skip a “sensory” claim we cannot date. A muslin on the carpet is still a mat. Character gyms get filthy; plain is easier to live with.
| Kit | Choose if | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| Simple foam or fabric mat | Cold floor, you will be down there anyway | You have a clean rug and no storage |
| Gym with arches | They track objects and you will sit with them | You would leave them under it unattended |
| Activity centre / jumperoo | Much later, if at all, and not a walker | Newborn — wrong category |
| Cot mobile / nest | Never in the sleep space | Always skip as bedding |
Is a play gym a cot toy or a sleep product?
Neither. The Lullaby Trust wants a clear cot: no soft toys, no loose kit, no arches over a sleeping baby. A gym is for the floor while you watch. If they fall asleep on the mat, move them to the cot. Do not “make the Moses basket more interesting” with hanging toys.

Which play gyms and mats are worth comparing in the UK?
Compare a Skip Hop-style gym and a simple foam mat — not a ranked “best baby gym 2026”. We have not lab-tested foam. Skip mystery off-gassing mats. Skip this compare if a towel already works. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when those URLs are live.

Play gyms · Amazon UK
Skip Hop / activity play gym
A floor gym for supervised awake time. Not a cot toy. Not a sleep product. Useful once they start tracking objects.
Skip if: You would put it in the Moses basket, or you already have a clean play mat and a parent’s face.

Play gyms · Amazon UK
Simple foam play mat
A wipe-clean floor is enough for tummy time. Skip giant puzzle mats that off-gas a chemical smell you cannot source.
Skip if: You have a clean rug and will be on the floor anyway.
Play gym or baby walker — what should you gift?
A mat. Not a walker. UK physiotherapists and accident-prevention bodies do not recommend baby walkers. Floor play, rolling and sitting are the safer developmental story. Read [baby walkers](/guides/baby-walker-uk) before you accept a second-hand walker from a relative. A bouncer is also optional — [bouncers](/guides/baby-bouncer-uk).
High chairs wait for sitting: high chairs. Do not buy a gym, a walker and a jumperoo as a “development set”.
When should you skip a play gym entirely?
Skip it if storage is already full of skip-list items. Skip it if you would use it as a babysitter. Skip it as a newborn essential. Muslins and sleepsuits still win as gifts — [muslin cloths](/guides/baby-muslin-cloths-uk). A voucher after they start reaching is kinder than a gym that sits in a box.
If the floor is the living room and you already sit there, you own a play space. The product is optional.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I introduce a play gym?
- When they start tracking and you will sit with them on the floor. Newborns need a parent’s face more than arches. Never as a cot toy.
- Are play gyms safe for newborns?
- On the floor, supervised, as the maker’s age range allows. Not in a sleep space. Move them to a cot if they fall asleep. Skip gyms with loose parts they could mouth unsupervised.
- Is a play mat better than a baby walker?
- Yes as a default. Walkers are not recommended by UK physiotherapists and CAPT. A mat supports floor play without wheels into hazards.
