When should you baby-proof a UK home?

When they roll, crawl or pull to stand — not at 20 weeks of pregnancy. Newborn kit is sleep and a car seat. Gates and locks are a later aisle. RoSPA still wants supervision: a gate is not a babysitter. Skip walkers that roll them into the hazards you just gated.

Amazon Baby bestsellers include pressure stair gates and adhesive cupboard locks (checked 13 Aug 2026). Safety-gate buyer’s guides exist. We match that coverage without pretending a newborn needs it.

Pressure-mounted or screw-fit stair gate?

Measure the opening. Follow the maker: many pressure gates are for doorways or the bottom of stairs, not the top. A fall down stairs is the risk. Screw-fit at the top is the usual serious install. Renters: use what the maker allows and check the landlord. Skip a gate that does not latch every time.

Which baby-proofing products are worth comparing?

Compare a measured stair gate and adhesive cupboard locks — not a forty-piece complete-house kit you will not fit. We have not crash-tested gates. Skip this until they crawl. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when those URLs are live.

    Pressure-mounted stair gate

Regalo-style gates are an Amazon UK bestseller. Measure the opening. Pressure mounts are often for the bottom of stairs; follow the maker on the top of stairs.

Skip if: You have not measured, or you needed a screw-fixed gate at the top of the stairs and this listing is pressure-only.

Does baby-proofing replace watching them?

No. Gates fail, locks peel, and walkers beat your reaction time. RoSPA’s line is supervision plus kit. A play mat on the floor you are on beats a gated room you cannot hear. Skip walkers. Proofing is not a babysitter.

Car-seat mirrors are a separate, often over-sold accessory. Watching the road still wins. The seat itself is car seats.

Should you gift a 50-piece proofing kit?

Usually no. Their stairs are not your stairs. A voucher or a measured gate after they have crawled is kinder than foam you guessed. Newborn gifts should not be proofing kits. Spend order still starts with sleep and the car seat.

Corner foam and toilet locks are optional. Medicines and stairs are not.

What else should you lock besides stairs?

Cleaner cupboards, dishwasher tablets, medicines, nappy-sack bundles, and window restrictors on upper floors. A nappy bin with cassettes is not a lock. Kettle flexes and tablecloths still pull. We will not print a room-by-room fear list; we will name the chemicals and the drop.

CAPT and RoSPA publish longer home-safety lists. Use those when you are ready. This page is the buying filter.

Frequently asked questions

When should I put stair gates up?
Before they crawl to the stairs, not before birth. Measure. Use the mount the maker specifies, especially at the top of the stairs.
Are pressure-mounted baby gates safe?
For openings the maker lists. Often not for the top of the stairs. Read the listing. We have not installed your staircase.
Do I need to baby-proof for a newborn?
No. Sleep and the car seat come first. Proofing is a crawling-stage job.
