Do you need branded baby wipes for a newborn?
You need a way to clean the nappy area: water and cotton wool, or fragrance-free alcohol-free wipes. You do not need the Amazon number-one pack. NHS nappy-rash advice names water or fragrance-free wipes, not a brand. Buy a small first pack. Restock what does not sting.
Amazon UK Baby bestsellers are mostly wipes — WaterWipes, own-brand, Huggies Pure, Pampers Sensitive (checked against the public bestsellers list, 13 Aug 2026). That is restock volume, not a ranking we tested. The nappies page is the first-pack logic; this page is how to choose wipes for your baby.

WaterWipes, Pampers or own-brand — which first?
Unscented and alcohol-free first. WaterWipes is the search term; supermarket own-brand is often the restock. Compare ingredient lists and pack size you will finish. Plastic-free packaging is a preference, not a skin test. If one brand stings, stop and try cotton wool and water.

Can baby wipes cause nappy rash?
Fragranced or alcohol wipes can irritate. NHS lists irritation from fragranced or alcohol wipes as a nappy-rash cause. Change often, clean gently, leave the nappy off sometimes. A wipe is not a treatment. If the rash is sore, a pharmacist can recommend a barrier cream — see nappy cream.
Reusable cloth wipes are a laundry system, like cloth nappies. They are not a surprise gift. We have not lab-tested a SKU for fragrance residues.

How many wipes should you put in the changing bag?
A travel pack or a handful in a pouch, not a 720-count box. The changing bag carries nappies, a muslin and a spare sleepsuit. Wipes dry out in a half-used packet; fold it closed. Cotton wool is awkward on a café floor; wipes win away from home.
Hospital bags need a small pack, not a warehouse — hospital bag.
Are baby wipes a good newborn gift?
A named unscented brand with a receipt can help. A mixed scented tower is a hamper tax. Offer to buy a second box of whatever they open first. Muslins and 0–3 month sleepsuits remain lower-regret. Skip “organic feel” wipes with no ingredient list.
Skincare beyond wipes lives on baby skincare. Do not gift cotton buds for ears — NHS says never inside ears or nose.
