When should you buy weaning kit in the UK?
When you are close to starting solids — around six months, following NHS first-foods timing, not a 20-week checklist. They need to sit with some control. A high chair is the furniture; bibs and spoons are the washable layer. Do not pack weaning kit in a hospital bag.

High chairs, booster seats and trainer cups are often lumped together. We keep high chairs and cups on their own pages so this one can stay bibs, spoons and bowls.
Bib, blender or pouches — what is worth buying?
A silicone catch-bib, two soft spoons, a suction bowl. A fork and a stick blender you own already mash most first foods. Pouches are convenience travel food, not a kitchen. Skip a steam-blender that costs more than a month of fruit. Skip novelty plates they will not use.
| Kit | Choose if | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| Silicone bib with pocket | You will wean at a table | They are a newborn |
| Soft spoons + bowl | You will offer puree or loaded spoons | You already have teaspoons you are happy with |
| Stick blender / fork | You will cook family food | A dedicated baby steamer was the only plan |
| Pouch stash | Travel days | As the whole diet |
Which weaning bibs and spoons are worth comparing?
Compare a silicone bib and a spoon-and-bowl set — not a ranked best weaning kit. We have not puree-tested them. Skip this until sitting is real. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when those URLs are live. A fork you own still mashes food.

Skip if: They are a newborn. This is not hospital-bag kit.

Weaning spoons and suction bowl
Soft spoons and a bowl that stays put. Compare dishwasher-safe silicone. Skip a blender if you will mash with a fork.
Skip if: You have not started solids, or a high chair is not in the house yet.
Do you need a high chair before bibs?
You need a safe sitting place. That is usually a high chair with a harness, not a Bumbo on a table. RoSPA does not recommend table-mounted chairs. Read [high chairs](/guides/high-chair-uk) first if you have no sitting place. Bibs without sitting is a sofa stain.
Never leave a baby unattended with food. That is not a product feature.
Is a weaning set a good newborn gift?
No, unless the baby is nearly six months old. It will sit in a cupboard. Ask first. A voucher timed for solids is kinder. Newborn gifts should stay muslins and sleepsuits, not a blender they cannot use on the ward.
If they asked for feeding kit at birth, they probably meant bottles or breastfeeding kit, not a blender.
What weaning gadgets should you skip?
Skip bottle-to-pouch adapters as a way to delay cups. Skip freeze-tray empires before you know what they eat. Skip self-feeding gadgets that replace sitting with you. Allergen introduction is an NHS conversation, not a branded egg-cup we will rank here.
If feeding is going badly, a health visitor beats an affiliate round-up.
