Key takeaways

  • Official pages own the numbers. We will not reprint a rate that will be wrong next April.
  • Still claim Child Benefit if you do not need the cash: National Insurance credits can protect a State Pension.
  • Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off £500 on GOV.UK if you qualify and you are not in Scotland.
  • Healthy Start helps with food and vitamins when you qualify. It is not a travel-system voucher.
  • Once admin is in motion, the buy-order does not change: sleep, car seat if you drive, then restock.
  • Second children change some grant rules. Read the official page for your nation, not a forum thread.

Should you still claim Child Benefit if you do not need the money?

Usually yes. GOV.UK says claiming can protect National Insurance credits toward a State Pension and can issue the child’s National Insurance number later. Only one person can claim for a child. Amounts change — read the rate on GOV.UK, not here. This is admin, not a shopping list.

US sites talk “cost of a baby” as a viral average. The UK version is this paperwork. High earners may have a tax charge on the payments; that is a GOV.UK and HMRC job, not a baby-kit verdict. Child Benefit UK is the dedicated claim page. We checked the Child Benefit overview on 13 August 2026. If your immigration status limits public funds, do not guess — use the official guidance or a regulated adviser.

What is the Sure Start Maternity Grant in 2026?

A one-off £500 toward the costs of having a child, if you qualify and you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. GOV.UK says you usually need to be on certain benefits and expecting a first child, or a multiple birth. Claim in the window they publish. Scotland uses Pregnancy and Baby Payment instead.

The £500 figure is from the GOV.UK overview (checked 13 August 2026). Eligibility, timing and the Scotland alternative can move — open the page, do not screenshot this paragraph as a rule. The grant is not a reason to buy a matching nursery. Put it toward a mattress and, if you drive, a legal car seat. See when to buy.

What is Healthy Start, and does it buy baby kit?

No. Healthy Start helps qualifying families buy specified foods and get vitamins. You usually need to be more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four, and claiming certain benefits. Under-18s have a different rule on GOV.UK. Scotland uses Best Start Foods. It is not a pushchair fund.

Apply on the NHS Healthy Start site via the GOV.UK hub (checked 13 August 2026). If you cannot claim public funds, GOV.UK publishes a separate route — do not improvise. Food and vitamins are the product. A travel system is still a later, optional buy. We stay out of clinical feeding advice; NHS pages cover breastfeeding and formula.

Where do you check maternity pay and leave?

On GOV.UK maternity pay and leave, including Statutory Maternity Pay and Maternity Allowance. Employers add their own policies. We will not invent a weekly rate or a start week. Open the official calculator, then come back to order of spend. Kit does not unlock because a payslip arrived.

Maternity leave is a work and benefits question. A car seat is a road-law question. Mixing them is how people delay the seat until week 39. Fit the seat while you still have energy. The budget planner uses bands, not a mystery-shop. If you are self-employed, Maternity Allowance lives on GOV.UK too — still not here. For weeks added up, Money Guide’s Statutory Maternity Pay calculator is a sister-site tool from the same company as BabyNido. It is not GOV.UK and not financial advice. Confirm the live rate on the official page.

What should you buy after the admin is started?

The same order as everyone else: sleep space, car seat if you drive, nappies, a few sleepsuits. Grants and benefit payments do not make a walker a good idea. Second-hand clothes can stretch a first-child grant. Unknown-history car seats still skip. Official advice stays free and un-monetised.

This is the only affiliate-adjacent part of the page, and it is still a skip-first hop. Compare a mattress and an infant seat after you have opened the GOV.UK tabs. Newborn essentials and the buying timeline turn paperwork into a kit order. Do not donate your grant to a wipe warmer.

Should you make a will when you have a baby?

Yes, if you do not already have one that names a guardian for this child. GOV.UK says a will should set out who looks after children under 18. Kit still comes in the same order. Skip an online will for tax planning, trusts, or if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland. We are not a solicitor.

Will after a baby is the guardians page. SwiftWill is a sister site from the same company as BabyNido — England and Wales, not a law firm. Official making a will guidance stays first. Changing a name later is changing a child’s name, not a shopping prompt. Optional cover is life insurance after a baby — not first kit.

Where can you check a maternity-pay figure without this page going stale?

On GOV.UK maternity pay and leave, then a calculator if you need weeks added up. Money Guide is a sister site from the same company as BabyNido. It hosts a Statutory Maternity Pay calculator. Rates move each April. We will not reprint one. Skip a screenshot from last year.

GOV.UK remains the source for eligibility, leave length and the current weekly cap. Money Guide’s maternity and shared parental pay explainer is the longer money page. Elite Digital AI Solutions Ltd runs both sites. A click there is never required to use BabyNido. Then come back to order of spend: sleep, a legal car seat if you drive, nappies, a few sleepsuits.

Sister-site disclosure: Money Guide is not an affiliate hop. There is no star and no /go/ wrap. Official GOV.UK pages stay first. It is not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I claim Child Benefit if I earn too much?
Often still yes, because of National Insurance credits. High-income rules and tax charges are on GOV.UK and HMRC. Read the dedicated Child Benefit page. We will not estimate your award.
How much is the Sure Start Maternity Grant?
GOV.UK states a one-off £500 if you qualify in England, Wales or Northern Ireland (checked 13 Aug 2026). Scotland uses a different payment. Confirm on the official page.
Does Healthy Start pay for a pram?
No. It helps with specified foods and vitamins when you qualify. Buy kit from the skip-first order, not from a food scheme.
