When should a baby start using a cup in the UK?

Around six months, with meals, as solids start. NHS wants an open cup or a free-flow cup without a valve so they learn to sip. Bottles for milk can continue for a while; by one year, move off bottles. Do not buy a sippy at 32 weeks pregnant. This is weaning-stage kit.

Free-flow, 360 valve or open cup — which first?

Open or free-flow first, even if it spills. Non-spill valves keep liquid on the teeth longer in a suck, which is why NHS prefers free-flow. Munchkin Miracle-style 360 cups are popular Amazon listings; treat them as a later convenience, not the teaching cup. Water or milk only — no squash.

Which trainer cups are worth comparing in the UK?

Compare a no-valve free-flow cup and a simple open beaker — not a ranked leak-proof winner. We have not spill-tested them. Skip juice in any cup. Awin hops can sit beside Amazon when those URLs are live. NHS drinks advice stays free.

    Open cup or beaker

The NHS end-state: an open cup. A cheap beaker can beat a branded “360” if they will actually sip water with meals.

Skip if: You wanted a bottle substitute for juice — water or milk only.

What should you put in a sippy cup?

Water with meals from around six months. Breast milk or formula if you are using a cup for that. Not squash, flavoured milk, juice drinks or fizz. NHS is blunt: sugar and acid sit on teeth. A “healthy juice” listing does not override that.

Bottles remain a separate decision: baby bottles. Dummies should not be dipped in anything sweet — dummies.

Do you need a cup before a high chair?

You need sitting and solids timing first. A high chair is for sitting. A cup is for sips with those meals. Buy neither for a newborn. Weaning kit covers bibs and spoons. Sleep and the car seat still outrank both.

Order of spend is still sleep and the car seat. Cups are cheap; they are not first-trimester shopping.

Are sippy cups a good baby-shower gift?

Only if they are close to six months or they asked. A newborn shower does not need a 360 cup. Include a receipt. An open beaker is cheaper than a brand tax and closer to what the NHS actually wants.

If you wanted to give feeding kit, ask whether they bottle-feed before you wrap bottles.

Frequently asked questions

When should I introduce a sippy cup?
Around six months, with meals. Prefer an open cup or a free-flow cup without a non-spill valve. Water with food. NHS drinks page is the rule.
Are non-spill cups bad for teeth?
NHS prefers free-flow so babies sip rather than suck, and so drinks do not sit on teeth. A valve cup is convenience, not the teaching cup.
What drink goes in a trainer cup?
Water, or milk if that is the feed. Not squash or juice as a default. Do not add cereal or chocolate powder to a bottle or cup.
