Do you need a cot, a cot bed, or a full nursery set?

You need one clear, flat, separate sleep space in your room for at least six months. A cot or a cot bed can be that space. Matching drawers, a changing top and a canopy are furniture, not safer sleep. A Moses basket is optional convenience. Buy the mattress as carefully as the frame.

Cot or cot bed — which should you buy first?

A cot bed that converts later can be the only sleep furniture you buy if it fits in your room now. A smaller cot or compact crib wins if a cot bed will not go beside your bed for six months of room-sharing. Do not park the baby in a nursery from night one to justify a bigger frame.

What mattress and gaps rules still apply to a cot bed?

The same rules: firm, flat, waterproof, snug, new. No gaps around the mattress. No pillows, duvets, bumpers, nests or weighted blankets. A cot bed is still a clear cot. Decorative wide bars and “cloud” mattresses fail the test. Second-hand frames are easier to reuse than second-hand mattresses.

When should you skip a nursery furniture bundle?

Skip it if the cot will not fit in your room. Skip bumpers, pillows and quilts even when they “match”. Skip a changing table you can replace with a mat on a chest. Can you start with a Moses basket and add a cot later?

Yes, if the basket is a clear, firm, flat space in your room and you accept it is outgrown when they roll. You do not need both at once. Adding a cot when they outgrow the basket is rational. Buying both “just in case” is how spare rooms fill with unused frames.
